'It's in the air'
detroit community air quality initiative

Initiative Overview
Detroiters Working for Environmental Justice (DWEJ) sets forth the ‘It’s in the Air’ Initiative throughout Detroit and surrounding areas, designed to educate and empower community members on air quality and climate change through unbiased data.
In recognizing the disproportionate environmental disparities that Detroit currently faces, we strive to reach communities most impacted by climate and public health issues through real-time alerts and instant access to outdoor air quality and environmental data.
This interactive approach to information-sharing hopes to encourage wide-spread engagement and foster greater awareness on air quality and its importance to our everyday health and well-being.
Join our movement today, and become a pioneer of a healthier, stronger Detroit.

Our initiative's goals

Increase accessibility to knowledge
Our initiative provides instant access to air quality alerts and environmental news through text message services, making knowledge on air quality accessible to many.

Simplify complex topics and data
Through our interactive data dashboard, we take complex air quality data and simplify it through easy-to-understand visualizations, applicable health practices, concise alerts, and shareable materials – all to guide healthier everyday living.

encourage community engagement
Through outreach and events, we encourage Detroit’s community members to come together as pioneers and educators on air quality through built knowledge, empowering others to be the voices of change.

build resiliency towards climate change
By building knowledge and awareness for air quality and its impact on our health, safety, and environmental, we can foster resiliency towards disparities through better practices and local policy against the threat of climate change.
